Because of the introduction of our wooden tulips we will tell you something about tulips and the history of tulips.
Origin of the tulip
The tulip is widely seen as a typically Dutch flower. The tulip originally comes from Turkey. The name tulip comes from the Persian word for turban because sultans used to have a tulip on their turban and wore them as a symbol. The tulip was brought in the 16th century to the Netherlands.
Growth of the tulip
The only species that occurs in the wild in the Netherlands is the “bos tulp” and has become established since the 19th century. The tulip comes from the lily family. The tulip grows from a bulb (looks like an onion). He is placed in the ground in October or November and it blooms from April to June.
Tulips need a special climate namely clear cold nights and cold in the winter. After flowering tulips are extracted from the ground and the bulbs are dried for later that year to put them again in the ground. Some tulips are gone wild.
Keukenhof
One of the biggest tourist attraction of the Netherlands in the spring is located in the town of Lisse namely the Keukenhof. This attracts each year many tourists and where one can find large colorful fields full of tulips.
Weight worth in gold
Early 17th century, the tulip was very expensive. The tulip bulb was worth its weight in gold.
